Mixed week for Smart Portfolios

With the exception of Ajay Parmar, fund managers found it difficult to negotiate the volatile markets. The Smart Portfolios benchmark, the S&P CNX 500 rose by 0.75 per cent during the week. His net worth now stands at Rs 11.12 lakh, up 11.17 per cent since inception. Amar Ambani performance is in line with that of the benchmark with portfolio value having appreciated by 7.37 per cent to Rs 10.74 lakh. Phani Sekhar and Praveen Panjwani, however, currently lag the benchmark with net returns of around a per cent each. In the week under review, Ajay Parmar"s portfolio value surged by 3.06 per cent, and Praveen Panjwani"s net worth grew by 0.80 per cent. While Amar Ambani"s net worth remained unchanged, Phani Sekhar saw a marginal (0.59 per cent) dip in his portfolio value. IN SHOPPING MODE Praveen Panjwani Assistant Vice President, Edelweiss Praveen Panjwani continued with his shopping for the second straight week. He fresh investments include Cummins, Crompton Greaves and Yes Bank. At the same time, he has averaged his holdings in Mphasis and IndusInd Bank. In the only sell order that he executed, he booked a partial loss on his investment in Transport Corporation of India (TCI). CMC, Gujarat Petronet and VIP Industries are the stars in his portfolios, while Hindustan Oil Exploration, Jet Airways and TCI are the laggards. The total market value of his portfolio now stands at Rs 9.30 lakh, and he holds almost Rs 79,000 cash. CHURNING CONTINUES Amar Ambani, Vice President (Research), India Infoline Amar Ambani, too, continued to churn his portfolio and executed 15 trades, nine on the sell side last week. His gross sales exceeded gross purchases by a margin of Rs 99,127. He booked significant gains on his investment in Shrenuj & Company, IDBI Bank and Gujarat Petronet. On the other hand, he suffered losses in Educomp Solutions and Indiabulls Securities. Some of his fresh investments are Vijaya Bank, Tata Metaliks, Sesa Goa and HT Media. Ambani holds 13 stocks in his portfolio and his investments are valued at Rs 6.83 lakh. His cash balance stands at Rs 3.91 lakh. He has 12 stocks in his portfolio including a new one, Esab India. Out of the 12 stocks, seven are trading above his cost price. eClerx, Axis Bank and HDFC Bank are the top performers in his portfolio, while Bharati Shipyard, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Infrastructure continue to weigh on his net worth. Almost 62 per cent of his current total market holdings (Rs 9.79 lakh) are in just six stocks out of the 12. Bharati Shipyard is the sixth firm in the list of top holdings by value in his portfolio (the top five are shown in the table). Sekhar holds about Rs 32,000 in cash. He executed 23 trades last week of which 16 were on the sell side. His gross sales for the week totaled Rs 6.02 lakh, while gross purchases stood around Rs 3.95 lakh. Sesa Goa, Orbit Corporation, Phoenix Mills and IRB Infrastructure were the major profitable stocks for Parmar. He, however, booked losses in TV 18, Anant Raj and Reliance Infrastructure. Currently, Torrent Pharma and Sabero Organics are the top performing stocks in his portfolio. Parmar holds 14 stocks and they are valued at Rs 8.81 lakh. He also holds Rs 2.31 lakh cash. CBI files supplementary chargesheet in Satyam scam
